Botox Q & A

What does Botox do to get rid of wrinkles?

Your facial muscles contract every time you smile, squint, or have any other type of expression. As you get older, your skin naturally loses collagen which impacts its elasticity. So when you make those facial expressions, the grooves in your skin stay behind. This is why you have fine lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum injections, including Botox and Xeomin®, work by “freezing” your facial muscles, thus preventing them from contracting when you smile, squint and so on. Without those frequent contractions, your skin starts smoothing out almost instantly. Dr. Hurvitz injects the botulinum serum into precise locations on your face to get rid of:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Frown lines between eyebrows

How often do I need Botox injections?

This depends on the severity of your wrinkles and how long Botox lasts for you. Both Botox and Xeomin botulinum injections last as long as four months, although that differs some between individuals.

Most treatment areas, such as your forehead, require about three to five injections. You’ll notice improvement quickly. It takes about 48 hours to achieve the maximum benefit. When your treatment starts to wear off, simply schedule a visit for repeat injections. Since botulinum injection appointments are quick — about 15 minutes or less — we can get you in and out during your lunch break.

Are botulinum injections painful?

You’re probably going to feel some burning and stinging when having a botulinum injection, including Botox and Xeomin. Most men and women report that the injections feel like a small pinch. It only lasts a few seconds though.

If you’re sensitive to needles or are in discomfort during your treatment, Dr. Hurvitz can apply a topical numbing cream. She also may numb the area with ice for a few minutes to make the treatment more comfortable for you. Just let her know if you’re worried about pain.
