Your time is valuable and you shouldn’t waste it by spending time waxing, plucking, or shaving unwanted hair. Laser hair removal treatments offered by dermatologist Kim Hurvitz, MD in Santa Barbara, California can help get rid of undesirable body hair. Most patients who get laser hair removal at Advanced Dermatology & Aesthetics Center notice a decrease in hair growth within a few weeks of their first appointment. After several short sessions, that unwanted hair is gone — permanently or for long term period.
Laser Hair Removal Q & A
How does laser hair removal work?
Advanced Dermatology & Aesthetics Center is equipped with the most modern laser hair removal system: Alma Harmony®. This state-of-the-art laser works by sending highly-concentrated light into pigments in hair follicles. As the pigments absorb light, the hair is destroyed.
Some hairs in the targeted area fall out on the spot. Usually though, hair gradually loosens up and falls out over a period of about two to three weeks. The next time it grows back, it’s typically lighter and thinner — if it grows back at all.
Why should I see a dermatologist for laser hair removal?
While laser hair removal is safe, a highly-skilled hair removal expert should perform your treatments. If your practitioner doesn’t have adequate training, you may be burned or have severe scarring.
Because Dr. Hurvitz is a board-certified dermatologist, she truly is an expert in skincare. You can be confident that your laser hair removal sessions provide the best results, in a safe medical environment.
What should I expect from my laser hair removal treatments?
Laser hair removal is a quick process, although expect to have a longer appointment for larger areas, such as your back. The day of your visit, try not to apply lotion, deodorant, or any topical creams to the treatment area. Don’t worry if you do — we provide wipes to help you remove any substances from your skin.
You need to wear special glasses to protect your eyes during your entire treatment. When it’s time to start, Dr. Hurvitz runs the laser over your skin. You should feel short pulses of energy, almost like tiny snaps from a rubber band. Usually this is tolerable, although it can be slightly uncomfortable in sensitive areas, including your bikini area or underarms.
If you’re in pain, let Dr. Hurvitz know. She provides topical numbing solutions to dull the area and lessen any sensations you feel. Afterwards, your skin might be somewhat red or even sore. We can give you aloe or a cooling compress to soothe the treatment area.
Gently exfoliate your skin each time you shower, and those unwanted hairs will fall out on their own. Most patients need four to six treatments, each about four to five weeks apart, to achieve the best results.
We have flexible scheduling for laser hair removal. Book your session online or give us a call.
