Chemical Peels 101

If you haven’t tried a chemical peel (or even if you have!) as part of your skin care program, the phrase “peel” can be intimidating. Chemical exfoliation is a non-invasive way to get immediate and significant results, especially when addressing sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, dull skin and acne. It helps to understand the process, terms and benefits surrounding peels to know if it is right for you.

It is important to understand there is a considerable range of peels that offer an array of intensities – from peels with little to no actual visible peeling to more significant sloughing. For best results, peels are administered in a series of 2 – 3 treatments, typically done four weeks apart. Winter is the ideal time to do a peel series because it is important to stay out of the sun post peel. By definition, a chemical peel impairs the skin in a controlled manner, producing a superficial wound. Your body’s response to that superficial wound is to produce collagen as part of the healing process. That is why tighter, younger looking skin is revealed post peel.

During your treatment, your face will be cleansed, prepped and the peel solution will be applied. Depending on your skin type, tolerance and the products used, there can be heat or prickly sensations when the peel is applied. This doesn’t last long and once the skin calms, hydrators and SPF are applied. Chemical peels are broadly defined by the depth of impact in the skin that they produce. They are categorized as superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels do not damage skin below the epidermis, the most superficial skin layer. Medium peels may reach to the superficial layer of the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin. Deep peels generally reach the deeper layers of the dermis. The depth of damage depends on the nature and concentration of the chemicals in the peeling solution and the length of time they are permitted to interact with the skin. Advanced Dermatology & Aesthetics Center offers a range of chemical exfoliation options to meet your specific concerns.
